Lake Mountain Alpine Resort is home to a special resident—the Leadbeater’s Possum, Victoria’s official faunal emblem. This small, fast-moving marsupial is known for its social nature and distinctive dark stripe along its back.

It was rediscovered near Marysville in 1961, after thought to have been extinct, so the possum has a strong connection to the alpine ash forests of Lake Mountain. Conservation efforts, including nest boxes and habitat restoration, have been implemented to supported its presence in the area. We also support researches and other groups who conduct activities to promote the success of possum populations.

Our mascot, Lenny the Leadbeater, is also elusive like the Leadbeater Possums in our forests. But sometimes he does make an appearance, for special occasions! Kent from Ski patrol, our resident enviro officer made sure to let us know Lenny has told him he’ll be popping down from his tree the weekend of the 27th on the Sunday, for our Christmas in July weekend to say hello and join in the festive fun! So make sure you come up for a visit to say g’day to Lenny the Leadbeater and enjoy some Christmas cheer!
